Invoking or evoking? What is the difference?

Over the years I have had many questions about what invoking vs. evoking consists of. Many believe that they are one in the same, when in actuality, evoke and invoke are VERBS of different meanings. Both can be useful during ritual, and here is why we need to know the difference when it comes to using either action...

Evoking is when you ask a Deity/God/Goddess and what it represents, to be present in your circle or at your ritual, (to join you) as do the Catholics when they call upon the Saints. (see list of some sample Deities below) Sometimes we practitioners enjoy honoring the presence of such Deities for inspiration or visions during a meditation. An energy may shift in the room or someone may receive a message of sorts, as we do when we get answers when we pray. Evoking should be done with clear and positive intentions. Make sure you record any special messages or happenings into your Book of Shadows. Upon closing your circle, thank your Deities for joining you and ask them to be ready to present at future rituals.

Many Wiccan's love to INVOKE a God or Goddess, in essence “invoking,” when you invite a particular Deity 'into' yourself, and for a time you 'become' that energy by channeling certain  “universal experts” (the Gods and Goddesses) if you will on a particular subject (like love for instance.) Actually feeling and visualizing the power of  a particular Deity, or even the Goddess herself, can boost self-confidence and set your vibrational energy to the level of that which you are calling upon. Channeling higher energies is simpler than you think but it requires a calm, relaxed, yet focused mind. Have your altar alive and charged at full force, and ask the particular Deity to enter you. You can do this through a poem, you can do this through simple asking, you can do this through meditation. You will begin to feel a connected-ness, a clarity in everything. You will know when you have tapped in to what you are seeking and it is a wonderful and warm feeling. Try it on a new or full moon, try it with a coven partner and compare what you feel, make sure to record the journey in your Book of Shadows.

Briefly here are some of the main Deities used in Paganism, their origins range from the Egyptians to the Greeks. For specific Deities, you can find them by researching online, the particular God you wish to channel and or pay mind to.

Aphrodite: Greek Goddess of love and passion: sexual rapture and physical passion.

Artemis: Greek; Goddess of the Moon. Call on Artio to provide inspiration for artistic projects and creativity.

Bast: Egyptian is the Goddess of Protection, often taking the form of a cat, for beauty and security.

Demeter: The Greek Goddess Demeter represents fertility, motherhood, and protection.

Eos Goddess of Dawn: She is the Goddess of passion and desire, and lust.

Fortuna: Roman; Goddess of Fate, if you need your luck changed she is the one to call upon for destiny.

Hecate: Greek, Moon Goddess of wisdom.

Isis: Egyptian, the collective form of the Egyptian Triple Goddesses, mother Goddess and bringer of life

Maat: Egyptian; Goddess of Justice and the Divine Order.

Morgan: Celtic; Goddess of War, for female strength and power.

The Muses: Greek Goddesses of inspiration such as music, poetry, painting, sculpting, etc.

Norns: Celtic; the collective name of the three sisters an excellent source of good fortune.

Venus: Roman, Goddess of love, passion, and beauty.

Evoking and invoking essentially get you to the same destination, focus and intention on the outcome you are seeking using help from energies that have seemingly "mastered" their talents. You don't even have to call upon the ancients! For instance, in today's world using ancient techniques, one may call upon the Goddess of Meryl Streep to invoke a performing arts energy. Just by connecting to someone or having a powerful belief in the knowledge of your inspiration, is enough to invoke or evoke that energy!

Go fourth and create something beautiful!
