Color therapy when working with candle magick, PART ONE

Dear friends, important info today! Colors, like smells and visuals, can affect our moods and emotions. Understanding how these moods are triggered from outside stimuli can not only help balance your chakras, but also help in magickal rituals. Candle magic is a quick, peaceful, and easy way to create an instant mood. It is considered "sympathetic" magic because it requires very few supplies and little effort to set up. You just need the candle, a match, and a thought to pair with the flame! Not only are candles used for magickal purposes, but as most of you know, clearly the average person indulges in finding joy and peace in lighting candles too, as candles are quite popular! In ancient times candles were used for light, and then later by the pagans fo celebrations and eventually churches adapted candle use for sacred ritual too. Wishing on a birthday cake by blowing out a candle is the simplest and most popular form of magic there is, and people don't even think twice about it! Learning the kinds of vibrations different colors emit from candles can help in corresponding your feelings and desires in candle magic for optimum results!

There have been many studies that have shown that color and its effects of electro-magnetic radiation of light on human mood and behavior is substantial and clear. Cultural responses to color often are derived from religion, or associations, like the blue sky, colors of flags, etc. But color regarding mood and how and why we are drawn to certain colors should be considered as you dive into your magickal and spiritual self-discovery. This is a wonderful definition of what color is… “Color is light, which travels to us in waves from the sun, on the same electro-magnetic spectrum as radio and television waves, microwaves, etc. Light is the only part of the spectrum that we can see. When light strikes any colored object, the object will absorb only the wavelengths that exactly match its own atomic structure and reflect the rest - which is what we see. Turn this around and it is easy to understand how the color of anything is a clear indication of its atomic structure or, in simple terms, what it is made of. When light strikes the human eye, the wavelengths do so in different ways, influencing our perceptions. In the retina, they are converted into electrical impulses that pass to the hypothalamus, the part of the brain governing our hormones and our endocrine system. Color is energy just like all other molecules and the fact that it has a physical effect on us has been proved time and again in experiments - most notably when blind people were asked to identify colors with their fingertips and were all able to do so easily. The shorter the wavelength, the stronger the underlying physical effect.” ( source: http://www.colour-affects.co.uk)

Color is more than just what we wear or how we decorate our homes, its nature's own powerful signaling system - the first thing we register when we are assessing anything: a very simple and obvious example of that is our reaction to a fly in our home: if it is black or navy blue, we will probably find it a minor irritation, but if it has yellow stripes our reaction will be different, such as on a wasp - most of us will recoil. The same color reading instinct tells us when food is unsafe to eat and throughout the animal kingdom color is widely used to signal sexual availability. This goes the same for moods and psychological states of mind and why we are drawn to a particular color. Identifying color significance's can greatly help how you interpret the world, your feelings and emotions, and learning which colors instigate your motivations!

Once you have gained perspective on which colors and their vibrations can attain and match your own desires FOR those colors, it is easy to create candle magic using this knowledge! There are many types of candles available today from soy, to paraffin, to beeswax, but choosing a candle for your needs is a very personal decision. Soy is great for long, fragrant burning, but not so great for sealing parchment paper or wax dripping. Beeswax is more environmental friendly unlike paraffin, but paraffin is great for dripping and sealing. If you are looking for a quality candle in your magick, the denser the better. It will last longer and a denser candle will hold and emit scent much longer and stronger as in a soy variety, as it is made with heavy wax and essential oils. Also, if you are looking to do vibrational work, (spells to match color correspondences) then using a thoroughly colored candle is best. (for instance don't buy a white candle that was dipped in red on the outside but still burns white on the inside.) Find a solid colored candle, inside and out. Choosing the shape of your candle is also entirely up to you. Some people prefer long sticks, others thick pillars, it was also depend on the size and decor of your altar. In addition to traditional candle spells, there are also shaped candles for specific purposes, especially for use in Wicca, such as for love, separation, money, etc, which we will discuss in PART TWO! :)

Once you have chosen the proper candles for your corresponding spell based on the vibrational key in the next blog, it is time to do some magic! There is no one way to create candle magic, but I suggest some soft music, some aroma therapy/incense/scented soy candle, and your desires. Simply open your circle physically or visually, hold the thought or prayer you are lighting the candle for, and hold the focus on your outcome in your mind as you light, and continue to hold the thoughts of your outcome while the candle burns. You can do this while you are awake, or even while you are cleaning or doing another task, you can alsi do it as you meditate... just don't fall asleep with lit candles near you! I like to use a particular candle for 1 particular purpose and will burn it for that purpose until it is dissolved, even if I have to come back to that purpose and candle on another day and re-light. If you decide you need a candle for a new purpose, it's best to bring in a virgin, never lit candle for your new circumstance.

To be continued in part two!

~Many Blessings always, LS
